General Overview
- The ETSF Young researchers' Meeting (YRM) is a series of conference held annually under the auspices of the European Theoretical Spectroscopy Facility, bringing together young researchers (students and postdocs) working in the field of ab-initio solid-state physics.
The main goal of the YRM is to give young researchers the opportunity to present their work and to foster interaction between invited speakers (experimentalists, industrial representatives) and young researchers. The peculiarity of YRMs roots in the fact that all young researchers are encouraged to give a 20-25 mins talk in an open, friendly environment, where no permanent researchers are allowed. Talks are then followed by motivating discussions. Each session starts with a longer crash-course on the actual topic, providing younger students the necessary background to understand more specialized talks.
All young researchers' are invited to apply through the CECAM site and submit an abstract for a poster or an oral contribution.
Novelties of 2014 edition
- "The Industrial-experimental Day",
The industrial day has been already introduced in previous YRM in order to reach one of the main goals of ETSF that is to use "Highly efficient computational software [...]" to bridge "the gap between theoretical methods and real applications", and offer "its expertise to researchers, industry, and students in the form of collaborative projects, free scientific software and training". In the previous YRM editions, industrial representative were mostly theoretitians showing how theoretical contributions can support industrial research. In this edition the representatives will be mostly experimentalists, and the main goal of this dedicated session will be the creation of links among the young members of ETSF and the industrial World. The young researchers of ETSF will be induced to make an effort to understand the language of communities external to their own, and find the points of contact from which to start to start new collaborations with the industrial and experimental World.
- "Outreach activity",
An half day will be organized where high-school students will meet European scientists coming from all around Europe and World, and will be introduced to the importance of theoretical simulations in physics and material sciences.
